Description

This classic Italian Chicken Parmesan recipe features tender, breaded chicken breasts fried to a golden crisp, then baked with marinara sauce and melted mozzarella cheese. Garnished with fresh basil or parsley, it’s a comforting and flavorful main course perfect for any dinner occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Breading

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, pounded to even thickness
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups Italian-style breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Sauces and Toppings

  • 2 cups marinara sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil or parsley, chopped (optional)

Cooking

  • Olive oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Season: Preheat your oven to 375°F. Season the chicken breasts on both sides with salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Prepare Breading Station: Set up three shallow bowls: one filled with all-purpose flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with a mixture of Italian-style breadcrumbs and grated Parmesan cheese.
  3. Bread the Chicken: Dredge each chicken breast first in the flour, shaking off excess. Then dip into the beaten eggs, ensuring full coverage. Finally, coat thoroughly with the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently so it adheres well.
  4. Pan-Fry the Chicken: In a large skillet, heat a generous layer of olive oil over medium heat. Fry each chicken breast for 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy. Transfer the chicken to a paper towel–lined plate to drain excess oil.
  5. Assemble for Baking: Place the fried chicken breasts in a baking dish in a single layer. Spoon marinara sauce evenly over each piece, then sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top.
  6. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through (internal temperature reaching 165°F) and the cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Remove from oven and garnish with chopped fresh basil or parsley if desired. Serve hot, optionally over spaghetti, zucchini noodles, or alongside a side salad and garlic bread.

Notes

  • For an extra crispy top, broil the chicken for the last 1 to 2 minutes of baking—watch closely to prevent burning.
  • Serve over pasta, zucchini noodles, or with a fresh side salad and garlic bread for a complete meal.
  • To keep it gluten-free, substitute regular breadcrumbs and flour with gluten-free alternatives.
